Cllr. Keith Myers, Conservative councillor for Acomb Ward, has closely monitored the sudden arrival of travellers who have set up camp on the old Manor School site in Boroughbridge Road and has contacted residents to reassure them that he is working with the council to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
Cllr. Myers said: “I’ve been around to all of the houses in the area and people are very upset, especially because the caravans have been placed around the edges of the site close to residents’ back gardens.
“Here’s an update of what I’ve organised with officers from CYC:
- Neighbourhood officers have served a ‘Direction to Leave’ notice;
- Court dates have been set for early this week to obtain this ‘Direction to Leave’;
- Officers have served the summons for this hearing;
- Bailiffs have been put on alert to evict once the council has the Leave Order.
“We’re also working with the Police and our security company and have notified Trading Standards, as we know the travellers are advertising gardening services.
“We also need to look at how we can secure the site more effectively in the future whilst allowing access for lawn cutting and other maintenance services. I’m taking this incursion by this group very seriously as York has made generous provisions for travelling families and there are very good facilities for those passing through which do not negatively impact on permanent residents.”
