The contracts to build York’s community Stadium having been signed off earlier this month means that the development of the 8,000 seat stadium and accompanying leisure facilities can begin before Christmas.
This is a significant milestone in the long timeline of this often difficult project, which the Conservative-led administration inherited from previous Liberal Democrat and Labour administrations. Greenwich Leisure Ltd., the ‘turnkey’ developer and operator chosen by the council to develop the stadium will now take formally take possession of the Monks Cross site, with construction equipment due to arrive shortly.
It has also been confirmed that Greenwich Leisure will also take over the management of the Energise Leisure Centre and Yearsley Swimming Pool
Leader of the Council David Carr said: “When our administration took over this project in 2015 we knew that there would be difficult days ahead working to resurrect what had become a virtually moribund programme under Labour. Finally getting to the point where the contracts have been signed has been as a result of a tremendous amount of effort by everyone involved and I am delighted that construction will finally be able to begin.”
