York Conservatives have today selected a Haxby mum of three as their candidate for the forthcoming council by-election, following the sudden resignation of a local Liberal Democrat councillor.
Over the past week, Jessie Secker has launched a popular campaign calling for better lighting and security in the Haxby-New Earswick underpass, with her petition to York City Council already gaining hundreds of local signatures from parents worried about children travelling to and from Joseph Rowntree School.
Jessie already serves on Haxby Town Council and is the Chair of the PTA at Wigginton Primary School. She comes from a family of local Haxby farmers who will soon be hit by Labour’s new family farming tax.
Over the coming weeks, over 21,566 pensioners across York Outer will see their Winter Fuel Allowance cut by the Labour Government. The cuts, which come as Labour bring in the biggest tax rises in modern history, will leave thousands of Wigginton and Haxby residents poorer, colder and more vulnerable as the cold winter weather kicks in.
Commenting on her selection as Haxby’s Conservative Candidate, Jessie Secker said:
“I’ve lived all my life in Haxby and I’m so proud to play my part in making our community such a wonderful place to live.
“That’s why I started this petition for better lighting and safety on the Underpass. Just last week my son got jumped on as he came back from Joseph Rowntree’s. Everyone here has known this is a problem for ages - but none of our Lib Dem councillors have lifted a finger.
“It’s time we just got stuff done here in Haxby and Wigginton- and if my neighbours vote for me in this by-election, that’s what I’ll do”.
