Leader of the Conservative Group on City of York Council Cllr Chris Steward has joined political leaders in York issuing a statement on the recent disorder that has swept the country in the last week.
Also signed by Luke Charters MP, Rachael Maskell MP, York and North Yorkshire Mayor David Skaith, York and North Yorkshire Deputy Mayor Jo Coles, City of York Council Deputy Leader Cllr Pete Kilbane, and Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on City of York Council Cllr Nigel Ayre, the joint statement is as follows:
The events of the last week have shocked us all, and our thoughts are with the three young girls' family, friends, and community at this difficult time.
As representatives in York, we have been deeply concerned about the unrest and violence that has occurred across the country; their actions do not speak for us as a nation.
York is a tight-knit community, one that celebrates its diversity, and we must pull together in the face of adversity. We will not let hate divide us.
We stand shoulder to shoulder with our communities who have been made to feel unsafe, and condemn those who have carried out violent actions. The minority that has perpetrated these actions does not represent us as a nation.
We wish to express our gratitude to all those emergency service staff who tirelessly serve, protect, and support our communities every day.
