CYC Conservative councillors have put forward a motion for next Thursday’s full council meeting proposing the council support a ‘Greater Yorkshire’ way forward on devolution, promoting an arrangement which would incorporate Yorkshire’s three traditional ridings less the separate South Yorkshire deal which is already underway.
Cllr. Stuart Rawlings who is proposing the motion said “York has been closely involved in all of the twists and turns of the Yorkshire devolution discussions and we have always negotiated to ensure that York plays a central role in whatever outcome Yorkshire authorities eventually agree to.”
“ Our group believes that at this juncture in the process it’s time to put forward the solution we in York would prefer, all things being equal , and acknowledging that negotiations are always in flux.”
“ We also know there are aspects of devolution politics we can’t influence, such as the new South Yorkshire deal which will be electing their own mayor next year.”
“Therefore we believe that the most viable solution for an “all Yorkshire” devo solution is one which is politically balanced, what is presently termed “Greater Yorkshire”. This would include all three of York’s traditional ridings And place York at the geographic centre of the region.
“Lets be clear: devolution is not just a political game, it is the way in which central government will be returning power to the region and will affect how transport, economic development and skills is funded in the future. Devolution could be a huge boost for York by increasing opportunities for localism and democracy , and driving forward the objectives of the “Northern Powerhouse”.
“Devolution will give York a voice on the world stage and improve transparency”
“Making our interests clear now regarding the direction in which York wants to go will help position the council in the ongoing negotiations and ensure that York remains central to any Yorkshire devolution plan.”
