City of York Council is set to use £50k to improve or install new pedestrian crossings.
The council has utilised both feasibility work and consultations with local residents to pinpoint which areas need the most investment, and several streets across York have been proposed for improvements. These include:
- Pavement build-outs on Huntington Road near Lowther Street
- Slight alterations to the crossing and link path on University Road opposite Heslington Hall
- Provision of a new section of footway on Main Street in Copmanthorpe.
Several other sites will be improved using the city’s dropped kerb programme. Proposals for Huntington Road and Wetherby Road will achieve the most benefit, so it is recommended that these schemes be implemented first.

Conservative councillor Peter Dew, Executive member for transport and planning, said: “We’ve listened to residents’ requests and where these streets met the criteria we will be making crossing improvements and making them safer for pedestrians.”
The Decision Session, during which a report will be put before Cllr Dew, takes place at West Offices on 12 July from 2pm and is open to members of the public, or can be viewed online at www.york.gov.uk/webcasts.
