This Saturday evening, landmarks across York and worldwide will take part in the annual Earth Hour initiative to raise awareness of climate change.
Joining millions of people and landmarks across the world, key buildings including York Minster, Clifford’s Tower and City of York Council’s West Offices will switch off their lights for one hour. 187 countries were involved last year, 9 million people taking part in the UK alone.
One Planet York, a network of citywide organisations, supports Earth Hour and is working to make York a more collaborative and sustainable city. This will be achieved with a thriving local economy and strong communities; a city of prosperity.
Councillor Tony Richardson, Conservative environmental spokesperson, said: “Earth Hour has greatly aided raising awareness of climate change and what individuals and organisations can do to help tackle it. I’m delighted that York is once again showing its support and would urge people across the city to think about what they can do at home or work to make a difference.”
