Some of York’s most famous landmarks have started turning blue in support of ME awareness week.
Clifford’s Tower and parts of the city walls will light up every night until Sunday 13 May as the council shows its support for The York ME Community.
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) is a long-term neurological disorder that affects 250,000 people in the UK and about 800 in York.
The most common symptom is extreme exhaustion, which can be caused by any physical or mental exertion.
Other symptoms of ME include: fast or irregular heartbeats, problems concentrating, and it affects cognitive function, mobility and the body’s energy production system.
Councillor Paul Doughty, Conservative spokesperson for health and social care, said: “The York ME Community does fantastic work raising awareness and supporting those affected and we’re keen to show our support during this week of national awareness.
“ME can have a hugely negative impact on peoples’ lives and those of their families, which is why the council has teamed up with the York ME Community to show our support and to help raise awareness.”
