I note that the Labour ward councillor for Acomb has again bemoaned the lack of open space in Acomb, blaming it all on the current administration.
But hang on, who were the previous ward councillors for Acomb going back years? All Labour. What party formed the previous council administration? Labour.
It was during the reign of Labour councillors in Acomb that the old Manor School site was sold off to create access to the proposed British Sugar site development, what a waste of perfectly good buildings that could have been used for the community. It was whilst the Labour party held both ward councillor seats that houses were built on the Beckfield Lane recycling waste skip site, houses were built on part of the Carr allotments and at the Viking Rd shops- all of these examples could have been left for open spaces. Acomb ward does need open space I totally agree, that is why this administration is committed to open spaces and providing a new play park for our residents on the old Manor School playing fields.
I don’t expect Cllr. Barnes to have a great deal of knowledge about Acomb, living in Strensall as he does, but I would have expected that he might have learned some history from the Labour councillors who previously represented Acomb and who still live in the ward, who could explain to him the reality of the decisions made about open space in Acomb over the past number of years.
Acomb ward has been totally let down by Labour not only the issue regarding open spaces, we don’t have any Council owned community/contact centre buildings, residents are forced to travel to Holgate or Westfield wards to discuss any housing/benefit/health issues. A total disgrace and all because of Labour.
As both a lifetime resident of Acomb and its first Conservative councillor for many years I have worked hard to maintain Acomb’s green spaces, and I voted for the Local Plan as the best chance for all of York to regulate its development. Perhaps Cllr. Barnes would like to explain to the people of Acomb why it was necessary for his party to decimate the green spaces in the ward over the years, because it was his own Labour Party in the driver’s seat during this time and no one else.
