Askham Bryan College will host York’s ninth annual Opportunities Fair on Wednesday 11 July, from 9.30am-2pm, giving young people with special educational needs a chance to investigate where their talents might take them in the future. It brings together workshops, discussions and advice on education, work, supported employment and leisure options in York for young people aged between 14 and 25.
Local colleges, organisations such as Mencap, United Response, Fit 2 Work, Inspire 2 Independence and Tang Hall SMART, all offering a wide variety of opportunities.
There will be chances to chat informally with specialists from the transition team, specialist careers advisors, and many others and with young people who are now in colleges or work themselves. The workshops include music making, tasters in horticulture, animal handling and preparing for work, a tour round the college and much more. It’s also a chance to pick up information from York’s Local Offer for children and young people with special educational needs.
Cllr Keith Myers, executive member for education, children and young people, said: “The fair is a great way to showcase some of the many options that are available to our young people with special educational needs in a warm and supportive atmosphere and to help them plan exciting and fulfilling futures. I’d encourage young people and their parents and carers to pop along and see what’s on offer.”
The event is fully accessible and the college cafe will also be open for lunch, drinks and snacks.
