True to the Conservative led administration’s commitment to put more money into York’s historic medieval walls, work is to begin to preserve and protect the most complete walls in England thanks to a £1.5m investment by the council.
The council already spends about £100,000 a year on routine monitoring and inspection work, but this extra cash will allow for a five year programme of renovation, which will include work on Monk Bar steps, which have become dangerous to use, and replacing Micklegate rood where, in addition to a new roof two new walkways will be installed.
This will allow access to the small museum in the bar when the walls are closed.
Conservative Cllr. David Carr, Leader of the Council, said: “In our first council motion as leaders of the administration Conservatives pledged to make the most of York’s walls, one of most treasured and significant historical assets, and I am pleased to confirm that we are following our commitment with action.
“Over a million people take a walk on the walls every year and we hope through this investment many more visitors will continue to enjoy them.”
