More than £20 million will be spent on roads, paths and cycleways as well as a new initiative funded by the government to make use of pioneering pothole detecting cameras to help identify and repair problems more quickly. Money will fund long term improvements as well as short-term repairs, along with money for gully-cleaning, neglected during the previous Labour administration and now crying out for investment.
Initially £8,091,500 will be invested this year 2017/2018 on footpath and road repairs. This represents an increase of 27% on the previous year’s budget. Over 100 roads are listed for either surface and or footpath repairs.
Hull Road by-election candidate Matt Freckelton said “This shows a clear commitment from the Conservative run Council to put frontline services at the forefront of what the Council does”. He went on to say, “time and time again the quality of roads and footpaths in York is brought up as one of the single most important issues on the doorstep for residents. The gross value add of this work will be significant from increased economic activity to deceased wear and tear on road vehicles. This is a clear win-win for all of the residents of York".
