Partners in the new York Stadium Leisure Complex came together today at the top of the cinema building for a topping out ceremony to celebrate construction reaching the highest point of the development.
The new community stadium and leisure complex will feature an 8,000 community sports stadium hosting professional football and rugby league games, new leisure facilities with a swimming pool, gym, dance studio, indoor and outdoor climbing facilities and a sports hall with spectator seating.
The commercial development on the stadium site will include a cinema complex, with IMAX screen, five restaurants and up to three retail units.
NHS outpatient services will be offered on site from a community hub and there will be a new Explore library and a York Against Cancer retail unit.
The new stadium, leisure facilities and the community hub are all on track to open from summer 2019.
Councillor Ian Gillies, Leader of City of York Council said:
“It was a super experience to stand at the top of the cinema building today with representatives from all of the organisations involved in the stadium project and to see the incredible progress that’s been made. The contractors are really doing an excellent job and the topping out ceremony is yet another milestone achieved, with completion just over the horizon.
“The works are progressing on time for a summer 2019 opening and from what I’ve seen I think residents will find a lot to like whatever their sporting, community or leisure interests.”
