York’s new flagship community hub – The Centre@Burnholme – is to open this weekend as an exclusive preview for local residents.
The Centre@Burnholme will act as a local hub for the wider £40m development of the former community college site, which will include community sporting facilities, housing and a health centre.
The hub will be part of Tang Hall’s new Explore Centre, which will provide a reading cafe and free wifi access, and will host events and adult learning courses from the original school hall. The centre is also home to York Community Church and Tang Hall SMART, an arts and music provider for the local community.
Cllr John Galvin, the Conservative spokesperson for culture, leisure and tourism, said: “The Centre@Burnholme is a key community facility which will provide a fantastic hub for the wider Burnholme development. The sensitive renovation of the original school building is a good example of how we can revitalise old buildings and I’m particularly delighted that we’re opening the relocated library with all the great facilities that our modern explore centres offer.”
The Centre@Burnholme will open at 9am on Saturday 23 June, before officially opening next month.
