Wednesday’s local jobs fair at the Parish Church Hal in Front Street saw over 250 residents visiting stalls representing 24 employers, including Marks & Spencer, Nestles and Gear4Music, as well as agencies such as Bright Beginnings Childcare Agency and WorkWithYork.
Help was also available for people to learn how to improve their CVs and how to get career training.
Conservative Acomb councillor Keith Myers began the fair several years ago and now as a councillor has helped the City of York Council take over organising what has evolved into a very successful event.
Cllr. Myers said “It went really well, and we’re really pleased at the response we had from residents. Local jobs fairs like Acomb are important for bringing employers and job-seekers together, especially for those not yet in mainstream employment or people looking to get back into the jobs market after a period away.
“Yesterday also gave young people a chance to have a look at some of the opportunities available if they’re beginning to think about careers.
“York’s Conservatives are committed to maximising everyone’s employment potential by doing all that we can to help support people into work and by promoting events such as this.
“The numbers went beyond what we had expected, so I’m hopeful there will be another event next year.”
