York’s Conservative group will ask the Council Leader and Deputy Leader to put together a working group to prepare a commemorative programme for next year’s centenary of the end of the Great War.
Cllr. Ian Gillies, who will be proposing the motion at the 30 March Council Meeting said “I think if we start now with a working group made up of councillors, officers, civic leaders, groups representing the armed forces, artists and interested residents we can put together a plan for commemorations in York which will be worthy of this landmark date.
“This group will be free to plan overall strategy, to liaise with other groups and the government regarding other plans which might be under preparation and to determine the group’s budget needs, I don’t think we need to be too directive at this point, but I do think the city needs to begin its planning as soon as possible.
“I know the people of York will wish to remember the end of World War I in a fitting manner and to remember and pay tribute to all of the people who sacrificed so much during that conflict.”
