The Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling, has pledged to continue to invest in York’s transport network and hailed the work of local Conservative candidates, Ed Young, Julian Sturdy and Kevin Hollinrake in pressing for improvements across the area.
Speaking during a visit to York yesterday, Chris said:
“This is the beginning of an exciting time for York’s transport network.
“Next year, we’re going to start seeing brand new trains on the East Coast mainline to replace the existing ones, which are decades old.
“We’re also going to see the old Pacer trains disappear right across the Northern network in the next 24 months and they will be replaced with new trains and refurbished ones. It will make a big difference to the customer experience.
“It’s all part of the biggest programme of modernisation of the railways across the north of England in decades.
“At the same time, we’re making investments in junctions on the Outer Ring Road and we’re planning to upgrade the A64.
“Ed Young, Julian Sturdy, and Kevin Hollinrake have all been pressing for these improvements and it’s another reason why we need a strong group of Conservative MPs for this area after 8th June.
Ed Young, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for York Central, added:
“As someone who’s lost hours of his life to traffic jams in and around York, I’m determined to make sure that York gets the investment and support we need.
“We’ve got huge opportunities to strengthen and improve our transport network over the next five years – and one thing I’m particularly keen to drive forward is the Northern Powerhouse rail link connecting the north from East to West.
“This could be game-changing in terms of improving the way York links up with the rest of the region.
“We need a strong, stable, growing economy to deliver those investments – and York Central needs an MP who will be banging on the door of the Department for Transport to get the investments we need.
