City of York Council’s figures published today show that 94.2% of York children have been given their parents’ first choice for primary school, and 99.4 per cent of pupils recieved one of their parents’ first three preferences. The percentage of children achieving their first preference has increased by 1.3 per cent between 2017 and 2018.
The percentage of online applications for primary school places has also continued to increase, and parents and those with online accounts can log in to the council’s parent portal at www.york.gov.uk/parentportal for easy access further to results and information.
The total number of children starting school in September 2018 is 1,935 pupils, down from 1,968 last year.
The number of children starting school in 2019 and 2020 are expected to be a similar size to 2018, but not as large as those in 2014 and 2015.
Councillor Keith Myers, executive member for education, children and young people, said: “The education provided by schools in York is among the best in the U.K. and it’s one of the reasons that York is such a popular place to live.
“Sometimes, though, popularity brings access problems and we are committed to maintaining the highest standards while meeting growing demand for places. The council works closely with schools to ensure that all parents have access to a transparent and effective city-wide admissions system.”
