City of York Council’s Conservative-led administration continues its £2.62 million rolling programme to replace aging traffic lights with work at the junction of Tadcaster Road and St Helen’s Road from Monday 30 April.
The council is advising drivers to expect severe delays whilst the upgrade is in progress, which will take up to six weeks to complete.
The council will also be making changes to the junction to improve traffic flows, take advantage of new technology and also prove cheaper and more efficient to run.
Councillor Peter Dew, executive member for transport and planning, said: “I’d like to thank residents, businesses and visitors for bearing with us whilst we complete the traffic signal renewal programme.
“We don’t take decisions which cause disruption lightly, but we have to make these changes which will improve the junction for years to come. We’ll do all we can to minimise any disruption.”
Work is scheduled to take place from 7.30am – 5.30pm, Monday to Friday and from 9am - 3pm on a Saturday. Evening work will be required during certain phases of the work, this will be kept to a minimum to minimise disruption to local residents.
Work will be suspended from Wednesday 16 May - Friday 18 May and on Saturday 26 May due to race meetings at York Racecourse.
