After six years and three properties, with council tax fraud topping £2800, John Rangeley has been sentenced. Pleading guilty to 9 counts of fraud the 51 year-old had claimed single person discounts at three properties he owned in York, with his scheme spanning 6 years (from 2010-2016).
A comprehensive investigation undertaken by York Council’s fraud investigation service (Veritau) was prompted by a vigilant member of York Council’s staff.
Veritau’s findings include the truth about Mr Rangley’s properties coming to light and the fact he had not lived in the York properties, which were each being lived in by several people during the claim period.
Mr Rangley pleaded guilty to all nine charges, as a result of the dedicated work of the Council’s fraud investigation team.
Councillor Helen Douglas, a member of the executive, said the following ‘...Fraudulent claims of single person discount deprive the council and local residents of much-needed funds...The council will not tolerate fraud and anyone with any information on fraudulent activity is encouraged to phone the fraud hotline on 0800 9179 247 or email [email protected]’
