Due to Conservative government legislation, care leavers can now access the support of local authority care leaving teams until they are 25 years old, and York council is making sure that young people who have been in care are aware this positive change.
Previously young people who had been looked after by local authorities were only able to access support from the local care leaving team until they were 21.
In York, the Pathway Team offers support and guidance on a wide range of issues including housing and finding work.
Cllr Keith Myers, the council’s Executive member for education, children and young people, said: “Most parents continue to support their children way beyond the age of 21 and I’m really pleased that the change in national legislation means that we’re able to continue to offer a wide range of support to our care leavers until they’re 25.”
