York Conservatives understand from conversations with the Leadership at City of York Council that we can expect some announcements regarding resumption of Waste services within the coming days and hope that Green bin collections and the re-opening of the Household Waste Recycling Centres will be given urgent due consideration.
Strensall ward Conservative Councillor Paul Doughty said, “York Conservatives have been in regular communication with the LibDem-led authority about reintroduction of green bin collections and the reopening of the Household Waste Recycling facilities at James Street and Towthorpe, urging reviews when possible. Like residents, we have been patient and sympathetic to staff challenges at the authority but we are concerned about increased fly-tipping. Unlike some, we have been careful not to distastefully exploit Covid-19 for political gain. We appreciate that the care of residents and staff welfare is paramount. It is no secret however that some other authorities have been able to continue with green bin collections. With 71% of CYC Council Staff at home, we would expect, even allowing for those who can continue their usual duties from home, shielding vulnerable staff and those who may have childcare issues until schools reopen, there must be some flexibility to use some staff, for marshalling and maintaining social distancing for example.
Councillor Doughty added, “Early last week Local Government Minsiter Robert Jenrick told the Commons that he expected ‘Tips’ to open “within weeks” and for Councils to prepare. The Conservative Group believe the Council, now over 7 weeks into lockdown, should now have had plenty of time to examine how best this can be done safely. CYC also has the benefit of seeing the experience of other Councils who have been able to reintroduce and adapt best practice from that and avoid the mistakes. An Executive Member told us yesterday that he envisaged Green bins to be reintroduced first to avoid unnecessary car trips to the tips when reopening is announced. We think that’s sensible and look forward to it happening soon.”
